Location: Chocó department, western Colombia (epicenter near San José del Palmar)
Date: August 10, 2026
Type of Crisis: Natural disaster
What happened: A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck western Colombia, with the Colombian Geological Service reporting a depth of about 103 km, the largest seismic event recorded in the country this century. The tremor was also felt in Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela.
Current situation: More than 160 people are dead, with the toll expected to rise as rescue teams reach remote areas. The quake damaged more than 1,500 homes, completely destroying some, along with more than a dozen health centers and even more schools. In Cali, collapsed structures included the pediatric and neonatal sections of a hospital.
Institutional response: Colombia declared a national emergency, deploying soldiers to affected areas. Much of Chocó is reachable only by boat or plane, complicating efforts to assess the full toll.
What's at stake: Continued access to remote, already underserved communities; hospital and school infrastructure already stretched thin before the disaster; risk of aftershocks compounding damage.
Why it matters now: While the earthquake itself could not have been predicted, the region's situation could have been: Chocó has long been recognized as one of Colombia's poorest and most underdeveloped departments. The people of Colombia, and particularly those of Chocó, require sustained attention following the disaster. This event also recalls the recent earthquakes in Venezuela. Beyond immediate medical relief, the region will need improved infrastructure and access to education for its population.
